Heritage Walk of Amritsar

Heritage walk is a guided tour deep inside the narrow lanes and Bye lanes of the 400-year-old city of Amritsar. This 400-year-old city has architectural marvels that originated centuries before the dawn of the modern era that we currently live in. Some of the key places that are covered in the Heritage Walk are:
Katra Ahluwalia
Katra Ahluwalia was once an area that was fortified with strong gates from all sides to keep hostile elements out. Today Katra Ahluwalia is a center for the wholesale market with shops of stationery, paints, chemicals, and more products. Buzzing bazaars offer Punjabi crafts and fabrics, while simple eateries serve Amritsari fish tikka.
Akhada Sangalwala
Akhada Sangalwala was a monastery that belonged to a sect of monks that were believed to be the followers of Baba Shree Chand Jee, the first son of Guru Nanak Dev Jee, the first guru of the Sikhs. The Akhada is a beautiful and colorful temple where the local public comes not only to pray but also to read newspapers and books that are housed in the Akhada’s library.
Jallianwala Bagh
The Jallianwala Bagh is the site of one of the most tragic incidents in the history of the holy city. It was here that on the Baisakhi day of 1919, General Dyer of the British Army ordered the massacre of hundreds of people including men, women, and children. Those that did not die from the bullets, died by jumping into the well that was located in the park to save themselves from the bullets.
Gobindgarh Fort
This is a historical fort located in the heart of the city. This for used to be occupied by the army but has been open to the general public since 10th February 2017. This fort was originally built by Gujjar Singh Bhangi in the 18th Century, who was the local chieftain. This fort was later conquered from him by Maharaja Ranjit Singh who renamed this after the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Jee.
Gurudwara Saragarhi
This gurudwara was built as a memorial for the non-commissioned soldiers that lost their lives defending their frontier fort of Saragarhi on 12th September 1897. The names of those brave men are engraved on a marble stone, fixed on a wall at the gurdwara.
